Identifying Signs of Memory Loss

According to studies, nearly 16 million individuals experience some form of memory loss as they age, which impairs both their memory as well as cognition. Recognizing the severity of the condition can be quite tricky, especially as it’s often associated with the natural aging process.
Here’re a few indicators of memory loss.

Trouble Doing Routine Tasks

Have you noticed your loved one struggling with day to day tasks and activities they previously had no trouble doing? It can be an indication of the onset of dementia, especially if they seem to be struggling with slightly more complex tasks lately.
This can include seemingly simple things such as adjusting the settings of the TV remote, or writing a check. They may even have difficulty doing household chores and activities, which results in their place looking messy and untidy when you go visit. Old age certainly tends to slow one down and may even cause forgetfulness, but if it interferes with their daily tasks this often, it may be due to gradual memory loss.

Frequently Misplacing Things

Another common problem a person exhibiting early symptoms of Alzheimer’s may face is misplacing their belonging quite frequently. This is an alarming sign if it keeps happening a lot all of a sudden, resulting in them losing their personal items and important belongings at unfortunate moments.
What’s even more troubling is if they have a difficult time retracing their steps to find the lost items. They may completely blank out, having no recollection of where they may have left it. In some cases, they may even accuse others of stealing their things because they have no memory of where they may have left them.

Behavioral & Mood Changes

If you’ve been noticing a swift change in your loved one’s mood or behavior, then this can be an indicator of memory loss as well. In the early stages of dementia, individuals tend to withdraw from social engagements and avoid going out. They may also be more moody and irritable.
This shift in personality can be attributed to memory loss as the condition affects a person’s judgment. They may act completely opposite to how they usually do, displaying uncharacteristic behavior and appearing to be unlike themselves.

Difficulty in Gauging Direction

When the brain is affected by a neurodegenerative condition, it interferes with the person’s ability to assess and calculate distances and directions. They have trouble understanding spatial relationships, and may not be able to recognize directions and landmarks that were once all too familiar.
For instance, they may not be able to recognize their street when returning from someplace, or have trouble determining distances while driving. Moreover, they may also face difficulty when looking at colors and contrasts.
